For me this image captures something of the mystery of Varanasi. The fisherman is one world and he is reaching across the shimmering mirrored surface into another dark and mysterious world.
This fisherman is a metaphor for the paradox of Varanasi, on the one hand the city provides the infrastructure to carry out the rituals demanded of the spirit world and on the other it is a living city.
A city that has been shaped by these rituals for thousands of years. Huge castles and mansions have been built by the devoted on the banks of the Ganges and then crumbled back into the river as they are reclaimed by time.
